Gem Junior Course
Extraction – Optional Activity
Extraction Experiment – Backyard Mining Operation
Introduction
What are you doing?
You’re experiencing authentic mining techniques used by professional miners around the world, discovering how difficult and skillful it is to extract valuable materials from the earth.
What does it show?
This hands-on experiment demonstrates different mining methods (open pit, placer, and underground) and shows how each technique works in different geological situations.
Why is this important?
Understanding mining is crucial to gemology because it explains where gemstones come from and why they’re valuable. Every precious stone you see in a jewelry store was extracted from the earth using these same basic techniques, often under much more challenging conditions.
