Unit 1: Introduction – Starting Your Gem Journey

Before we dive into the world of gemstones, let’s learn the basic words that every Gem Junior needs to know! When you are finished reading the definitions and watching the video, click “Mark as Completed” at the bottom and then click Next at the top to move onto the next lesson.

  • Gemstones – Pretty, shiny rocks from the Earth that people collect or wear as jewelry.
  • Gemologist – A gem expert who studies and checks out gems like a detective.
  • Gemology – The fun study of gems, how they form, and why they’re special.
  • Geology – The big study of Earth, including rocks, dirt, and how the planet changes.
  • Minerals – Natural stuff from the ground with special building blocks, like ingredients for rocks.
  • Identify – To figure out what something is, like naming a gem.
  • Synthetic – Fake gems made by people in labs to look like real ones.
  • Crystals – Shiny mineral shapes with patterns that repeat inside.
  • Chemical structure – The structure of tiny building blocks and how they’re arranged in something.
  • Organic materials – Stuff from living things, like plants or animals, not rocks.
  • Mining practices – Ways
